Going to Culinary School in My 40s — Preparing for My Next Chapter
These days, when I sit at the table, a quiet excitement stirs in my heart. Maybe it’s because I know I’ll be leaving this familiar space soon… Even though it’s something that’s repeated throughout our travels, this time feels a little different.
In the last two years of traveling the world, we’ve never stayed in one place for more than two months.

When we first started, we were full of uncertainty and nervous questions—Can we really live like this? But now, it’s the settled life that feels unfamiliar to us. Luckily, this nomadic lifestylesuits us incredibly well—like a comfortable pair of jeans you’ve worn for a long time.

Our journey began when we left Maui for Jeju, and since then we’ve traveled through Hanoi, Singapore, Bali, Bangkok, Tbilisi, a 42-day pilgrimage across France and Spain, took brief rests in Rome, Naples, and Scottsdale. Unexpectedly, we then traveled all around Japan including Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Chiba, Fukuokaand then moved through Cebu, Kuala Lumpur, and Chiang Mai. And now, ironically, back to Hawaii.

My recent routine has been peaceful. Waking up in the morning and opening the blinds, I see Hawaii’s blue sky, ocean, and white clouds.
I pick up my phone and scroll through meaningless content before finally climb out of bed to decide what tea to drink today. While I rotate through different teas, lately I’ve been into golden milk latte.

I microwave a cup of unflavored, unsweetened soy milk and boil water in the electric kettle. I found this mushroom golden milk blend on Amazon, and surprisingly, it’s quite tasty. Turmeric and ginger are difficult ingredients to regularly incorporate into meals, so that’s another bonus.

I add a teaspoon of the powder to a mug and pour in just a bit of hot water to mix it. By now the soy milk is hot, so I foam it generously with a frother. I love this foam very much, so I make it very thick and plentiful. (I also love beer foam. Especially the creamy foam of Japanese draft beer in Japan—those who’ve tried it know exactly what I mean. There’s even a bar in Tokyo that serves a glass filled 99% with just that cream foam. Jacob always gives me his foam because he knows how much I love it.) The frother I bought on Amazon works surprisingly well. I pour the frothed soy milk into the mug with the golden milk mixture—and it’s ready, my golden milk latte!

While making this golden milk latte, I think about what to do while drinking it. Sudoku? Daydreaming? Chatting with Jacob? Reading a book? Studying French? Taking a sip of the golden milk latte, fills my mouth with soft, creamy foam, and it feels good.

It seems like today is the first time I’m sharing this news with you all. We’re soon leaving for Paris—a new chapter in my life, culinary school. Yes. I’m going to Culinary School in My 40s.
You might be thinking, “What??”. I know, I know. Honestly, it’s a long story. To make a long story short, I’m finally going to the culinary school I dreamed of back when I first started cooking. The desire to live in Europe for a year might have been even stronger motivation, but that’s not the only reason I decided to go.

We fell in love with Paris at first sight.
We promised ourselves we’d come back—not just to visit, but to stay. To live, even just for a month or two. And finally, in January 2025, we made that promise real. We committed to moving to Paris for a year and signed up for culinary school. Yes, you read it right. Your girl is going to culinary school. (in her 40s!!)
For years, I was proud to be a “home cook”. I feel valued to share “easy” recipes with the world and help people. But slowly, I began to feel the limits others placed on that label.
My time on Culinary Class War on Netflix gave me a lot to think about—not just about food, but about recognition, legitimacy, and the strange weight society gives to titles and certificates. Because I chose YouTube as my career, some felt entitled to belittle my skills and the food I poured my heart into. I’m not doing this because of what people said. I’m doing it because I know what I’m worth. This is me choosing to take up space, my way.

I have no plans for what to do with the diploma. There’s a 120% chance I’ll do absolutely nothing with it. I first wanted to attend culinary school in 2011, around the time I started YouTube, but back then, I didn’t have the money. As winning cooking competitions, working in a casino restaurant in Las Vegas and YouTube took off made culinary school feel unnecessary.

I’ve always been self-taught—in drawing, cooking, filming, photographing, everything. I’ve never learned properly from a professional or at a school. Yet I’ve made it here on my own, by myself and I’m always proud of my self-taught journey. Throughout this journey, society has given me plenty of grief for not having a college degree or formal culinary training. But that’s exactly why I held my head even higher, proudly embracing my self-taught identity.

I could have taken my career in the direction of restaurant business and more complex recipes. There were plenty of opportunities. But I chose “helping people” instead—deciding to provide easy recipes anyone could make at home, offering a friendly and delicious meal for their tables.
Now, what I used to do can be done by many others, and I feel like I’m losing my place. The position I built for myself no longer feels like mine. I think it’s time to try something new. I don’t know what that is yet. That’s why I’ve begun writing.

‘From My Table,’ will be stories from the many tables I will face ahead. Thoughts on quiet days alone, brunches on days when our bags are packed, and all the anxious excitement in between—I plan to share them slowly from today onward.
Thank you for reading. I hope to see you again in the next story. ✨

So excited for you and this new chapter! We often use age to hold us back and I’m glad you’re not. If this was a dream, do it. You only have so much more to build onto your already amazing skills.
Cant wait to see what the future brings for you! I’m here for it! Fighting!
Thank you so much LY! I’m nervous but excited—and yes, it’s been a long-time dream. Let’s see where this chapter takes me! Fighting!! 💛
It’s amazing of what you’ve accomplished. I know from experience being a military wife was not easy and yet you’ve managed to make a name for yourself. Having Jacob alongside is wonderful. I wish you both many more adventures and looking forward to your updates.
How exciting! I can’t wait to read about your experiences! Enjoy!
Thank you C Austin!

I really am and I can’t be more grateful. 🙏🏼 Thank you Lauren!
I’m so happy for you! It is never too late to realize your dream. I am a long time fan and a mother of 4 grown men who also love to cook because they grew up with a foodie mom who was always cooking. I think of you whenever I use my long tweezers because you sent me the link on Amazon 🥰. When my second son was in 5th grade he told me he wanted to be a chef and go to the Culinary Institute of America. He did, and that is where he met his wife who was in the baking program. They live in Portland Maine and he created a product he is getting out to markets as well as working as a caterer. My oldest is in finance, the third works in the ER as a Physician assistant and my baby is a Naval officer working in the pentagon. Despite the careers they all chose they all have a passion for cooking and eating good food! I don’t know why I just shared my life story but like I’m sure many people feel about you I feel like I’ve gotten to know you. I’m so happy for you and Jacob and all the traveling you’ve done and I wish you all the best in your next adventure! Keep us all posted! It’s great to have you back!
Thank you so so much, Laura!! Also thank you for sharing your story with me—you must be such a proud mama of your four sons! What an incredible journey each of them is on. I absolutely loved hearing about your second son and his culinary path (and that he met his wife at CIA—how sweet is that!). And the fact that all your boys share your love for cooking says everything about the warmth and joy you brought to your kitchen.
It truly means the world to me that you’ve been following along all these years—and I LOVE that you still use the tweezers!! 🥰
Thank you again for all the love and encouragement. I’ll definitely keep sharing along the way! 💛
You will never lose your place! While others can do what you do, they don’t have your unique flair. Your website has always been my first go-to for Korean dishes. I feel that we share a similar understanding of what constitutes authenticity when creating delicious meals.
Thank you Sari! Wow, it means a lot to me that my website is your first go-to!! 🥹 Thank you for your support and for seeing me. 💛
You’re never too old to learn something new, and if it’s a passion you want to pursue then go out and do it! I’ve been following you since you started Asian at Home (OMG, time flies- I can’t believe that was 9 years ago) and have even tried many of your recipes and have kept them as kitchen staples, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for you. Fighting!
Wow, 9 years!! Time does fly!! 😭 Thank you so much for sticking with me all this time and for trying my recipes—it means the world to know they’ve become staples in your kitchen. Thank you for the support—fighting!! 💛💪
So happy for you ! And thank you so much for sharing your new journey ,I look forward to hearing about your school days and how you feel about your new challenges !
Thank you Kelly!!! 🙏🏼
Congratulations! How wonderful! Adventures are what keep life exciting. I always say we should learn something new every day. I am 67 and would go to school in a heartbeat. You share so much of yourself it’s time you got something in return. We watched you on Culinary Wars from our Tacoma, Washington USA home. So happy to see you there and cheered for you! Now we will cheer for you in Culinary school. Go kick some butt, girl!
Thank you so much Laurel!! Your words truly warmed my heart 🥹 I love your spirit!! 67 and still ready to jump into school, that’s so inspiring!! Thank you for cheering me on all the way from Tacoma, both during Culinary Class War and now for this next chapter. It means the world to me!!
I wish you well and I’m so proud of you! I went to cook school in the Army. It was my dream to be all I could be, back in the day, while learning to be a cook. My father taught me how to cook first though. I’ts good to learn the basics of course. Your knowledge is vast already.
I know you will have a great adventure and your stories will be many, ofschool, classmates, new friends and time with your hubby. I’m excited for you..age is just a number. You are young of spirit with your man. Safe travels my friend 😉
Thank you Maria!! I love that you followed your dream through the Army. I definitely feel young at heart! 😉 lol! So grateful to have your encouragement. Thank you for the love and well wishes! 💛
Hello Seonkyoung! I feel sad that you will not be doing the YT anymore. I have a collection of your recipes and I love them All. But as you said, you need to try something new for yourself. That is good. In life we cannot remain forever in one space. That is not “growing”. Knowledge does not come with age or University degrees… it comes with experiences in life. Each will have different levels of knowledge and wisdom depending on how you live your life. Obviously you are doing amazingly well trying many possibilities. Traveling widens one’s horizon. I wish you All The Best in whatever you decide to do. Live for what you believe in. Take care!
Thank you so much, Pura! Your words truly touched me. It might be a while if I ever return to YouTube—but I’ll never say never! 😊 Life is all about growing, evolving, and exploring, and I’m so grateful to have your support as I step into this new chapter. Take care and thank you again from the bottom of my heart! 💛
Best wishes to you on your journey. I really enjoyed your recipes on Utube. So easy and delicious!
Thank you Sue!! I will share more recipes… not sure on Youtube but I definitely will keep sharing!!
I pray for GOD to bless you with love, knowledge, and success. May GOD give you guidance on your path to new chapters in your life.
Thank you Karen, thank you so so much!!! 🙏🏼
I wish you the best of luck on your current culinary journey! I love your recipes and love how you make it so easy. You and Jacob seem to have a wonderful relationship and life. So excited for you both!!

I always love seeing updates on your life and hope to continue to see them through this. Glad you are following your heart while still feeling compelled to let us in a little. Enjoy Paris and culinary school!
Thank you so much!! Over ten years, wow!!! That means more to me than I can say 🥹 I’m so touched that my videos helped you fall in love with Korean food and made it feel approachable. That’s all I wanted do!! It really makes all the work worth it. I’m excited (and a little scared!) for this new chapter, but I promise I’ll keep sharing little pieces along the way. Which school are you going to in Paris?
I’m going Le Cordon Bleu. ☺️
That is an awsome and couragous decision, welcome to Europe!!
What diploma/trainingprogram are you going to do? They have so much options .. (I see on the website, would love to go myself! 😍).
Hope you will also enjoy your longstay in Paris and France as a whole, and please come visit The Netherlands this summer! 😉
“I’m attending the full Cuisine Diploma with all three courses. I wanted to do the Grand Diplôme, but I didn’t want an overly packed school schedule—lol! I still want to learn pastry and bread too, so… I’ll decide later!
I’m so proud of you, congratulations on your decision! Thank you for all these years of sharing your skills and recipes with us. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey with you, and am sincerely hoping it won’t end.
Thank you so much Chris! This isn’t the end. Just a new chapter. I’m excited to keep growing and sharing in new ways!!

Thank you for your support and long time following Avan!! It means the world to me! 💛
You will probably teach them how to cook
I have been your long time fan and I learned a lot from you.
Thank you and good luck on your schooling.
I hope you won’t get bored because…what can they teach you that you don’t already know?
Lol! I might—especially during the first few classes. 😂 But there’s always something new to learn, and I’m ready for all of it!
I think as we get older, we tend to know what matters most to us. All the best to you on this journey. Enjoy every moment with Jacob.
I think you’re right CY! Thank you for your support!!
Good for you!!! Never too late to pursue excellence. You are an inspiration. Best wishes to you.
Thank you so much Sungmi!! 💛
So glad your are back and doing well in Paris. Looking forward in hearing about your new adventure at 41, which is still very young. Much success and wellness.
Bonjour, You go girl. Having lived in Europe (Germany close to French border for 3 yrs. & honey mooned in Paris 45 years ago. I learned Korean & Thai cooking from neighbors. Europe is interesting. The various regional cuisines will be fun. French Culinary is quite interesting and light. The complex cuisine is harder due to various techniques. There’s lots of farms in countryside with fresh produce. The varieties are endless. You & Jacob have lots of fun. “Bon Appetite.” Au revoir. 🤙🏽
Have just read your story! It’s fascinating and inspiring. Enjoy and I’m rooting for you too!
