Asian Zing Meets the Grill!!!
Alright, I have finally had an opportunity to sit back down and share. Between work and a real busy personal life, I commend everyone who blogs on a daily or even regular basis. This attempt of “Asian at Home” will be more challenging, but if I can be this successful, either I’m just that good or Seonkyoung is really that talented and easy to follow. I’m going with the latter. 🙂
I wanted to share this recipe with you all last week because it will be AWESOME for any Superbowl party!! It’s not too late yet, but very close. I know you probably have your menus chosen, but if you have a little time and room for one more dish, this is it.
This was one of the first YouTube videos Seonkyoung recorded. It was done before the Saints won the Superbowl a couple years ago (who she picked to win by the way…this year she has the Ravens) Check out the video!!
She baked them, I had the idea to do a combo grill, then smoke. Let’s just say AMAZING!!
I used 6 whole chicken wings.
The marinade/rub is simple:
1 teaspoon Korean red flakes
1 teaspoon rice wine
garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste
That’s it!!
I coated the wings well and put into the fridge for a couple hours.
About 30 minutes from cook time I prepared the smoker. As you can see I have a Char-Griller side smoke box smoker. I’m a beginner at smoking, but love doing it. I used lump and regular charcoal to get my fire started. Later I’ll use hickory chips for a more smokey flavor.
I preheat the gas grill side and cook the wings for about 30 minutes. I’m grilling then smoking to save some time. You can chose either option obviously, but I like the time saving grill with the deep smokey flavor. I know there are other ways to accomplish this, but I have fun doing it this way.
Next, I take the wings from the gas grill side and place them on the smoke side. The smoker is at about 200 degrees. I smoke the wings for 30 minutes. This isn’t really going to cook them, but add that nice smoke flavor.
While the wings are cooking, I start the Asian Zing Wing sauce. This sauce has soooo much flavor and is perfect for my taste. I love spicy and sweet together and this sauce is a PERFECT combination of that!!
So I watch Seonkyoung’s video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfdDWpqusmk, because I knew it would be a little challenging to just go from the recipe. And here it is:
1 cup water
2 Tablespoons rice wine
1 1/2 Tablespoons soy sauce
1/2 Tablespoons peppercorns
3 whole (but smashed) garlic cloves
ginger (same amount as garlic)
1/4 large onion
1 green onion
BIG hand-full of dried chili (they can be fresh too)
molasses (use as much as you want for the sweetness, I used about 2-3 Tablespoons)
Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer until the ingredients have cooked down. I let cook for 20 minutes
Then drain.
After you drain, pour the sauce back into the pan. We need to thicken the sauce with a little corn starch so it coats the wings perfectly. Make sure the sauce is simmering when you add the corn starch. (I learned that form Seonkyoung)
THE WINGS ARE DONE!!
Place them in a big bowl and pour your sauce over them. Mix well and garnish with green onion and sesame seeds. You are about to experience CHICKEN WING HEAVEN!! I’m so serious, these are AWESOME!!
Thanks again for your support and I know you will love these wings when you try them. Check out the YouTube link for detailed instruction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfdDWpqusmk
Remember, be creative. I didn’t even think food was this much FUN!!

This may sound funny to you but since I am used to Seonkyoung, I read your posts in her voice in my head. :p Then I remember that it’s not her right now. I am going to show my hubby this recipe, he likes grilling food. I can do the prep and sauce and he can do the grilling 🙂
